You've been a paramedic for 2 years now and you feel like nothing is a secret to you anymore. This is the career you've always dreamed of and you're the happiest you've ever been. You're currently working the night shift and it's dinner time, which means you have an hour to eat. You and your partner are parked near a busy area downtown that becomes quite quiet when the sun goes down. You're enjoying your break time. Suddenly, you hear a knock on the passenger door of your ambulance. You roll down the window and the person starts frantically talking about needing help. He says it's just around the corner from here and that it's an emergency. At this point, you've been on your break for barely 15 minutes, you won't be able to eat again until the end of your shift.
Choice 1 : Help the Person
Choice 2 : Call Another Team.
Choice 3 : No Need To Help the Person.

You decide to help the guy, telling yourself you'll be able to eat quickly between calls later on. Your partner agrees and tells you to go see what's happening while he prepares the equipment that could be needed. You get out of the truck and the person waves for you to follow him. He starts walking fast as you turn the corner of the street. You get a chance to fully see the man as the streetlights illuminate the sidewalk and notice the sun is barely above the horizon now. You realize that the guy isn't well-dressed and seems a little dirty, but you don't question it, having dealt with a lot of different people, you never really judge anyone on looks anymore. When you get close to an alley, the man starts getting fidgety and points towards it. At that moment, you hesitate. It seems a bit sketchy, should you call the police for back up just in case something happens, or should you find the patient that could be seriously hurt?
Choice 1 : Let's Get Assisted by the Police.
Choice 2 : No Need To Call the Police.
You decide that the right thing to do is to call another team. The man seems stable and is not in distress. You explain that you are currently eating because you will not have time later on, this is the only break during your shift. You tell him that you are calling for another ambulance to come assist him. The man starts getting fidgety and tells you to hurry up. You tell him the other paramedics are five minutes away. They arrive and catch up with the strange man. You partner starts wondering if you two should assist the other team in case they need help and you ask yourself the same question...
Choice 1 : Keep Eating, It's Your Only Chance.
Choice 2 : Stay Close and Ask if They Need Help.
You think it's better to be careful and tell the man to wait for a minute so you can get back to your partner. The man seems a little distressed by what you said, but he doesn't insist. When you're closer to your coworker and further away from the guy, you tell him to call for some assistance from the police because the scene doesn't exactly seem secure. When the police finally arrives, they secure the scene and go through the alley. When they come out, the initial man is in handcuffs and is trying to spit on the police officers. They tell you that you made the best decision of your life because the man was actually the one that assaulted the patient you were going to see. What happened was that the man had beat up his wife worse than he usually does, to the point where he wasn't sure if she was still alive or not, and when he saw an ambulance, he took a chance and told himself that no one would know what happened because his wife was unconscious. You get to the patient quickly and tend to her injuries to bring her to the hospital as soon as possible, so she can get some higher care. After you transfer her to the team of doctors and nurses, one of the police officers that followed the ambulance to the hospital tells you that the press is outside because a passerby saw the whole thing happen. He also lets you know that the man had a knife on him and that things could've gone way worse if you hadn't called them. He tells you that you should go see what it's all about and congratulates you before leaving towards the doctors. You go look for your partner to have an important conversation before making a decision.
Choice 1 : Go Talk to the Press.
Choice 2 : No Time for the Press, Other Patients Need an Ambulance.
You don't think the police will be necessary for this call. You've been in so many weird situations, nothing phases you anymore. If you waited for the police, it'd be so long, and what if the patient was actually in a life or death situation? Your colleague is nowhere to be seen, you wonder what's taking so long.
Choice 1 : Keep Waiting for Your Partner.
Choice 2 : No Time to Wait.
You're so excited to have the press here, you've always wanted to be on television. You make your way towards the exit and wave for your partner to join you. The journalists start the interview and you're overwhelmed by the cameras. Despite being nervous, they picture you as a very confidant hero. Over the next few weeks, the story goes viral, everyone you cross congratulates you and expresses their admiration for your work. Your boss asks if you'd like to be the face of the company, it comes with a raise and lots of benefits. You don't hesitate to say yes. When retirement is just around the corner, you ask yourself if you made the right decision. What you liked about being a paramedic was working in the field, and you spent the last years of your career talking about saving people without actually doing it. Was all the attention really worth it?
Choice 1 : Try Again
You talk to your partner and decide you don't have time for the press, you can't just take the rest of the night off, other patients are probably waiting for an ambulance. You really love your job and this intervention will stick with you forever. Even though you missed a big part of your dinner break, you have a very positive attitude for the rest of the night. The next day, when you see your boss, he congratulates you and tells you you're doing a great job and are close to a promotion. Retirement is just around the corner and you are as ready as you'll ever be. It's been 25 years since the day you saved the woman and you still remember it vividly. You're happy and satisfied with your career path and can leave the job in a peaceful state of mind.
Choice 1 : Play Again
You tell the man that you're just waiting for your partner, it shouldn't be too long. You're telling yourself that you should call him on the portable radio when he shows up with the standard equipment for any given intervention. You are relieved as you ask the guy to guide you towards the patient. Your partner stares at you with a worried look and you give him a reassuring glance to tell him that it's going to be okay. The man is in front of your colleague and you're following behind him. He glances back again and points towards the emergency button on your radio. You press the button that sends a silent alarm to the 911 station and start walking slower. You begin to see the frame of a woman's body on the floor. Your partner starts shouting at the man, you run towards them but it's already to late. The man stabbed your partner in the stomach and ran away. You don't follow him and rush to your friend instead. He is loosing blood and you have rarely seen anyone with this type of stab wound survive before getting to the hospital, trauma equipment or not. You look in your partner eyes and see the look that will hunt you for the rest of your life.
Choice 1 : Try Again
There's no time to wait for your partner. You decide to follow the guy down the alley where he guides you towards a young woman. The woman is laying down and is seemingly unconscious. There's blood everywhere. You hesitate for a second as you wonder what happened for her to be in this situation. You turn towards the man with a questioning look instead of instantly caring for the patient. You put the pieces together and see the man's crazy look as he figures out that you've just understood what had happened to his girlfriend. He was the culprit, he was the one that had beat her up. He hoped you would just care for her and not question yourself. You looked down as he reached for his pocket, but it was too late. When you looked back up, the knife was already slicing through your neck.
Choice 1 : Try Again
You tell your partner that if you don't eat now, you won't have a chance to eat later. This job is so demanding, you need to take time for your basic human needs or you'll exhaust yourselves in the first couple years of being a paramedic. He agrees and you both start playing a guessing game to figure out what the man actually wanted. Seconds later you hear the new team calling for backup on the trucks radio. You look at your colleague and wonder what's going on.
Choice 1 : Answer the Call for Help.
Choice 2 : Another Team Will Answer the Call.
You tell them you'll accompany them in case they need help, and they appreciate the initiative. You and the second paramedic fall back and share your thoughts on the situation. She tells you that the man seems a little odd as he is pointing down an alley and you tell her that you should probably call for the police. She agrees and you do exactly that as she catches up with her teammate to go down the dark alley. You follow behind and your own teammate appears next to you. The first paramedic makes a surprised sound and the second one pushes the guy as he takes a knife out of his pockets. You get a glimpse of a young woman laying down on the alley floor.
Choice 1 : Try To Stop the Man!
Choice 2 : Get Out, This Situation Is Dangerous!
You find it slightly odd for them to call for help on the radio because they know that you and your partner are right around the corner. You tell your partner that you guys should answer the call, and he agrees. You go in the direction you saw them leave earlier and when you get closer to an alley, you hear a person shout. You yell for you partner and tell him to call for some assistance from the police. You squint your eyes to try to see better into the dark alley just as you see the initial man running in your direction. You scream for him to stop as he slams into you. A knife falls on the ground next to you and you kick it further as you see the panic in his eyes. Two police cars arrive and the guy gets up in an attempt to run away again but it is too late, the police are already after him. You make your way down the alley to see one of the paramedics with a stab wound on his stomach, the other trying to stop the bleeding and a young woman unconscious on the floor. At that moment, you tell yourself that this is why you became a paramedic, it may seem disturbing, but if you can save more than one life in this situation, it would be better than none.
Choice 1 : Try Again
You think it's a little weird but don't necessarily believe it's an urgent situation. You tell your partner they probably need help with moving the patient, it often happens in your field of work, so you shouldn't worry about it. Later on, you assume they got the job done and get on with your night. The next day you are woken up by a call from your boss asking you to pass by his office before clocking in. You agree and think nothing of it. You decide to check your phone as you usually do. You see a text from your coworker and click on it to find he sent you an article. The blood drains from your face as you read the headline. "Paramedic Stabbed During an Altercation Downtown, Died Last Night".
Choice 1 : Try Again
You run towards the man as he tries to stab one of the other paramedics and push him to the floor. The man gets up and swings the knife in your direction. You try to avoid it, but it reaches your stomach. You suddenly regret your choice, and he takes another swing, this time you are not as lucky... Everything goes black.
Choice 1 : Try Again
You run towards the exit of the alley and hear footsteps behind you but you don't turn around to find out who it is. As you reach the end of the dark path you see the flashing blue and red lights. You shout at the police to get ahold of the man as they pass behind you. You finally stop running and see your partner right besides you. He tells you that the guy got scared and didn't know if he should run or fight. He says that he was right behind him running and as he says that you see the police tackle the crazy man on the ground. A feeling of relief washes over you as you hear the other team of paramedics getting ready to bring the woman you saw out of the alley. This day will probably change your perspective on a lot of things in the future. For years, you will think about what could've happened and how it could've been so much worse...
Choice 1 : Try Again
This job is so demanding, you know that if you decide to help this person during your dinner break, your supervisors will not give you some extra time to finish your meal time. You've learnt that if you're not stern enough, they will think that they can overwork you as much as they want and that's not fair. You look at the man up and down and notice he is a little dirty and not well-dressed. You think he is probably a drug addict. You ask him if it's really urgent because this is the only time you'll have to eat for the rest of the night. He says that it is a little urgent.
Choice 1 : It Is Break Time, No Time To Help.
Choice 2 : Show Him Where He Can Get Help.
You tell the guy that if it is not that urgent, he should call the health information line or even go to the emergency room by himself because ambulances need to be available for an urgent situation. He takes a few steps back and stares at you for a second. He seems a little sad as he makes his way down the road, opposite to where he came from. Your partner gives you a look, but doesn't question your decision, being the newest paramedic between you two. After that small incident, you finish your meal and your break and get on with your day.
Choice 1 : Face the Consequences of Your Actions.
You tell him that you aren't available right now but that if he dials 911, he can have access to the service he needs. You tell him that he can even call the health information line or go directly to the emergency room if it isn't that urgent. He hesitates and mentions that it would be very quick, he just needs a little help.
Choice 1 : Call Another Team.
Choice 2 : Ask Your Supervisor for Advice.
A week later, your supervisor gives you a call. He tells you that you need to come to the station as soon as possible. When you get there, he brings you to his office where your boss and his boss are already waiting. They tell you to take a seat. At this point, you are really scared, thinking about everything and anything you could have done wrong in the past year. The big boss is the one that starts the conversation. He says that they have just been informed about a situation that happened last week. The police found a dead body downtown, and they have been investigating. During that investigation, they found a suspect on video footage taken in the neighborhood that dreadful night. The suspect approaches an ambulance, and they tell you that the truck's number corresponds to the one you were in that night. They tell you that they can't comment on the investigation, and regarding what they know, they will have to terminate your position. The only thing you feel is regret. You feel as if you are the reason that a person has died. You can't live with this on your conscience.
Choice 1 : Try Again
You feel bad for the man and decide it would be a good idea to ask your supervisor for advice. You tell the guy to wait for a minute as you call your supervisor. After informing him of the situation, he reminds you that your job is to help others, break time or not, you are supposed to assist anyone who needs you. You realize he's right and turn towards the man with a new attitude.
Choice 1 : Help the Person.
