Becoming a paramedic.

Done with school.

I am finally done with college. I managed to pull off straight A's in most of my classes and got my diploma. Where should I go work as a paramedic now?

Choice 1 : Work for the CTAM (south of Montreal).

Choice 2 : Work for US (Montreal).

Choice 3 : Work for SPLL (north of Montreal).

Ambulance

Working for US (Montreal).

I applied at Urgence-Santé and got hired. I received the schedule from a paramedic who was injured and started working the next day. For first call ever, we got called for a 63-year-old man with chest pain. Since I am new and sort of doing OJT for the first couple of months, I could not drive in emergency yet because I do not have enough experience. When we arrived on the call site, we had to climb three flights of spiral stairs to get to the apartment. The man who called us is pale, diaphoretic, and weak. He can not breathe properly because he has what sounds like water in his lungs. Should we evacuate now or do further investigation to find what the patient has?

Choice 1 : Evacuate now.

Choice 2 : Investigate the chest pain.

Chest pain

Working for SPLL (north of Montreal).

I applied to work for SPLL, made an interview and got hired. My first shift was a night shift in Oka. We only got two calls in twelve hours. I was pretty much the same for weeks, and I realized that I may want more action in my life. What should I do?

Choice 1 : Stay at SPLL.

Choice 2 : Look for a job elsewhere.

Oka's path.

Working for the CTAM (south of Montreal).

I applied to work for CTAM, and they called me back and want to interview me. We talked about the working environment and the office politics. A few days later, they called me to say that I have been hired. My first shift is tomorrow.

Choice 1 : Have a little party to celebrate the start of a new life.

Choice 2 : Go to sleep early to be well-rested tomorrow.

CTAM ambulance

Consequences.

I celebrated with some friends from college who also just got hired in another company. We stayed up late, and I ended up missing my alarm clock. I did not want to arrive late for my shift, so I drove faster and got hit by a car. My back got injured and the doctor said that working as a paramedic would only bring me more back problem. I guess I will do dead-end jobs for the rest of my life.

Choice 1 : Try again.

The accident

First shift.

I got up early, but because I live on the northern shore off montreal I got stuck in the traffic and could not arrive for 4:30. That's when I realized all the disadvantages of working so far away from my home. What should I do?

Choice 1 : Move out to the south shore of Montreal.

Choice 2 : Quit and find work elsewhere.

Late at work

Moving out.

I tried to look for an apartment on the southern shore of montreal, but I could not find any that I was not skeptical about the general condition of the place.

Choice 1 : Try again.

Looking for another job.

Where should I go work instead?

Choice 1 : Work for US (Montreal).

Choice 2 : Work for SPLL (north of Montreal).

Evacuation.

The patient was too weak to walk, so we had to make him sit on a stair stretcher. Half way downs the stairs, he went on a cardiac arrest. Our only hope to save him was to get all the way down as fast as possible. By doing so, I was not able to correctly support the weight of the patient and ended-up hurting my back. Because we did not investigate the problem, we putted the patient's life and our safety at risk. It was a bad choice.

Choice 1 : Try again.

Chair stretcher

Investigate the chest pain.

We investigated the chest pain and found out that the patient had a heart attack. We gave him medication and prepared the evacuation. Once in the ambulance, my partner stepped on the gas, and we were gone and in route for the hospital. During the transport, while crossing an intersection, we got hit by another drive who didn't see us. I got severely injured because I could not wear a seat belt and later died of my wounds.

Example of a wrecked ambulance

Stay at SPLL.

I decided to continue to work for SPLL. After a while, I gained seniority, which gave me some advantages. For example, I can more often than not choose my schedule. I will soon have to choose my next schedule. What should I choose?

Choice 1 : Night shifts.

Choice 2 : Day shifts.

Ambulance on a road

Night shifts.

For some weird reasons, I decided to continue to do night shifts even if I hate it. It feels likes a drudgery. I end up quitting the job after 2 years because I lost the drive of work.

Choice 1 : Try again.

Day shifts.

I decided to do day shifts instead of night shifts. Today I am being called for a car accident. When we arrive on the scene, we see one wrecked car and by the look of it, the accident was extremely violent. There is broken glass everywhere and the car is upside down. What should we do?

Choice 1 : Go check how the driver is. He might need immediate health care.

Choice 2 : Wait for the fire department to secure the scene.

flipped over car

Wait for the fire department.

The fire department arrived two minutes later and secured the scene for us. We successfully retrieved the patient, and we need to bring him to the hospital as fast as possible. The closest hospital is 8 minutes away but there is a hospital specialized in major trauma 17 minutes away. Where should we go?

Choice 1 : Go to the nearest hospital.

Choice 2 : Go to the specialized hospital.

Go check how the driver is.

We ran to the car but my partner slipped on the broken glass and hit his head on the ground. When I check on him, I accidentally cut myself by putting my hand on the ground. This was not a great idea.

Choice 1 : Try again.

Shattered glass

Go to the nearest hospital.

We took the direction of the nearest hospital. When we arrived a whole team of nurses and doctors was waiting for us. They did everything they could but the hospital did not have the needed instrument to save the patient. Was he really meant to die?

Choice 1 : Try again.

A nurse

Go to the specialized hospital.

We took the direction of the specialized hospital. When we arrived, the patient was between life and death. Fortunately, the hospital was equipped for this kind of situation, and they managed to save him. I love my job, but I know I won't be able to be a paramedic my whole life. One day, I will have to retire. Should I start setting aside money for my retirement?

Choice 1 : Yes

Choice 2 : No

In the operation room.

Why did I do that?

I finally retired at the age of 68 because I did not save any money. I know I will have to do dead-end jobs for the rest of my life and will not be able to enjoy my retirement. I should have made better choices.

Choice 1 : Try again.

Retirement.

I retired at the age of 58 because I saved up a lot of money. I am also able to travel abroad and am fully enjoying my retirement though I will never forget the good old days.
